This essay stresses that despite a greater commitment by the World Government’s to protect public health, forests, and wildlife, policies geared to develop the country's economy have taken precedence in the last 20 years. While industrial development has contributed significantly to economic growth in India, it has done so at a price to the environment. Not only are industrial pollution increasing public health risks, but abatement efforts also are consuming a significant portion of countries gross domestic product. The world environmental situation is likely to be further aggravated by the increasingly rapid, large-scale global extinction of species. It occurred in the 20th century at a rate that was a thousand times higher than the average rate during the preceding 65 million years. This is likely to destabilize various ecosystems including agricultural systems. The variety of life on Earth, its biological diversity is commonly referred to as biodiversity. The number of spec ies of plants, animals, and microorganisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth.
